🌿 Essential Oil Safety

A dedicated space for understanding the fundamentals of essential oil safety and their application in our products.

At Sophia Insight Organics, we believe in the gentle power of plants — but we also honor how potent that power can be. Essential oils are concentrated botanical extracts and should be treated with the same respect you would give to any powerful medicine or remedy. The U.S. does not regulate the use of essential oils, which means that anyone can use and sell them in any way, even if they are hazardous to your health. Use them wisely, use them consciously, and treat safety as a part of love.

🌿 Essential Oil Safety Cheat Sheet

A quick guide for safe, wise, effective use

1. Essential oils can interact with medications and medical conditions. If you have health concerns, are pregnant, nursing, have a chronic condition, or are giving oils to a baby/child, we recommend you speak with a licensed physician, midwife, or qualified aromatherapist.

2. Always Dilute – Essential oils are potent. Never apply them directly to the skin. Mix them with a carrier oil (like jojoba or coconut) before applying. We do this for you with all of our products. Below are maximum use guidelines:

  • 1%: pregnancy, breastfeeding, children ages 2+ years old
  • 2%: Body Lotions & Oils, children ages 2+ years
  • 3%: Bath Products, children ages 6+ years
  • 4%: Acne Spot Trx, Wounds, children ages 15+ years
  • 5%: Pain, Rollerballs, children ages 15+ years

These are general recommendations. There are exceptions. For example, clove bud oil should be used at no more than 0.5% no matter what; and peppermint oil should not be administered to children under 10 years old.

Many recommend some essential oils for babies under 2 years old. We do not. We are still learning a lot about how these oils affect our hormones and since the development of baby’s brains and hormones is especially delicate, we recommend holding off on using them for as long as possible, but at least for the first two years of life.

3. Avoid Eyes, Mouth & Mucous Membrane – Most essential oils are not safe for ingestion, including the ones we use.

4. Check the expiration or best-used-by date – Beyond losing their potency, some oils can become oxidized and cause adverse reactions.

5. Use Extra Care with Babies & Pregnancy – Babies and pregnant bodies absorb differently. When in doubt, use less or choose alternatives. Consult a physician, midwife, or qualified aromatherapist.

6. Rotate Oils & Don’t Overuse – Repeated use of the same oil can lead to sensitivity. Switch oils periodically and give your skin breaks.

7. Store Safely – Keep essential oils in dark glass bottles, away from heat & sunlight, out of reach of children & pets — preserve potency and safety.

8. Patch-Test First – Apply diluted oil to the inner forearm and wait 24 hours. If redness, itching, or irritation occurs — discontinue.

9. Be Sun-Safe – Even though we do not use photosensitive essential oils in our body care products, some oils (especially citrus) can cause phototoxic reactions. Avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds for 12–24 hours after usingzzz.

10. Listen to Your Body – Everyone responds differently. If something feels too strong or off — reduce, dilute, or discontinue. Your body’s wisdom comes first.
